Dell’s E-Slim 12" Netbook Crosses over to the danger zone.

If Intel can prevent OEM’s from using the Dual Core CPU in their netbook and notebook designs, how come they can’t stop Dell using the Z-Series Atom in a notebook? Just as the Dual-core CPU could damage notebook sales, so to could putting a 12" screen on a netbook, even if it didn’t have a [...]

Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Unboxing at Laptop.com

One good thing about the flood of netbooks is that consumers get lots of choice. Believe it or not, there are a few netbooks that manage to stand out from the others. I feel that the IdeaPad S10 has the potential to stand out; it looks quite attractive, and you’ll see in the unboxing [...]

HTC Shift extended Battery from Mugen.

I recall seeing this solution a while back on JKKMobile but Paul from MoDaCo has now got one for testing. Its a 47Wh battery pack for the HTC Shift from Mugen which should allow about 5hrs online time thus solving one of the HTC Shift’s biggest problems. It’s a tidy solution but at nearly $240, [...]

Dual Core Atom CPUs in netbooks? don’t count on it

You may have seen some news over the last few days that Intel has started to ship a dual core variant of their Atom processor. To some of you that may sound like good news for the mobile world as nearly every new netbook seems to be running on Atom, and who doesn’t like a [...]

Porient H12 Tablet. Guess the price.

Pocketables have some new information on the latest Porient tablet, the H12. Compared to the earlier H9 model its smaller (4.8" compared to 7") and has no hard disk but it looks like its still running their Linux OS. With the relatively old Xscale processor (as seen on the original Pepper Pad a few years [...]

What I Learnt from an Old UMPC today.

I’m a very lucky person. There are about 8 UMPCs in the house at the moment but at times it gets to be a pain because I’m swapping around too much doing tests and trying out my latest ideas. Sometimes it’s almost impossible to choose a device. The SC3 because its small, has a good [...]

Preview of upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad x200 Tablet PC

Warner shares a video preview of the upcoming Lenovo ThinkPad x200 Tablet PC. Great close-up shots and fair compare & contrast with the current ThinkPad x61 Tablet PC.

image

As an x61 Tablet PC user and someone who is right handed, I'm pleased to see even little features, such as the pen storage area located on the right side.

Of course, the increased battery life will be great for everyone. You can potentially configure a system to optimize for up to 15 hour battery life, depending on the processor and battery cell combination.

Look for additional information from Lenovo on September 23, 2008.

Asus Eee 900A video review with Jkkmobile

Jkk, master of all Eee PCs, has put up a video review of the Eee 900A, one of the newest Atom powered Eees. Swing by his site to watch the whole video and listen to Jkk’s thoughts on the netbook.

Aspire One, Integrated 3G, Flatrate Internet, 1 Euro + 35 Euro per month with T-Mobile Germany.

With a total cost of 840 Euro, this isn’t a cheap way to buy a laptop and its not the first ever subsidised netboook on the market but if your’re like me and already pay 20 Euro per month and are thinking of a 35 Month contract as a standaone purchase, and only want [...]

NOVA Side Arm UMPC

It is nice to see a UMPC in the recent sea of netbooks. UMPCPortal forum user SlickRick has come across the NOVA Side Arm 2 (Chippy jokes in his mini blog, "…not ARM based!"), a new UMPC which easily reminds me of the Panasonic CF-U1. It looks thinner than the CF-U1 but I still [...]

Ultra Mobile Projector. ADPP-100 from Adapt.

How about this for an ultra mobile gadget? There’s no confirmed specs, pricing or availability yet but I’m loving the idea of having a mini projector for my UMPC. It obviously has a video-input (fingers crossed for VGA) and can play back some content from an internal or SD Card memory. You could create havoc [...]

Gigabyte M912V reviewed. Issues highlighted.

Laptop Magazine, Hardware Canucks and Hardware Zone have all now published full reviews of the Gigabyte M912V, the 1280×768 version of the Gigabyte Netbook.
Nothing surprises me in any of the reviews. Laptop Mag, who published their review last month) highlights the battery life and the screen resolution as problem points along with small keyboard and [...]

Medion Akoya Mini (MSI Wind) 10-week Review.

Checking out a mini-review by Andario, one of our members on the forums today made me realise that I should put together my own objective long-term review of the Akoya Mini that I’ve been using off and on for a while. It deserves it as its been working well and trouble free since I queued [...]

Next Nokia Tablets to include Omap 3 and 3G. (Speed and connectivity at last!)

It’s so funny. One of the last comments I wrote last night was that I thought the next Nokia Tablet would be based on Omap 3. Today, its confirmed. Dan (Thoughtfix) is out in Berlin and has just started live blogging. The other thing I wrote in my comment was ‘I’ll be extremely interested to [...]

Moblin news from OSiM. Fluendo and Qiro

As the day goes on I’m sure we’re going to get more MID-related software news from Open Source in Mobile, the conference taking place in Berlin for the next three days.
The first MID-related press release comes from Fluendo, the media player software company. They’ve announced a codec pack for Moblin that will cover MPEG2, MPEG4 [...]

Nokia Tablet news incoming

Watch Tablet Blog for news as Thoughtfix has just put a tip up. All he says is:

OQO CEO Resigns, Might Not Mean Good News For the UMPC Maker

Dennis Moore of OQO has just resigned as their CEO. It's rarely good news when your CEO resigns and says he found a better opportunity elsewhere, but we're hoping the startup continues to refine their UMPC into something everyone can get behind. [Dennis Moore Blog via Gotta Be Mobile]

Ti and the 1-watt MID

It seems we’re giving a lot of airtime to ARM-based architectures today. And why not; The evolution of the smartphone into the MID and netbook sectors is one that we should all be aware of. In this, largely promotional video from Texas Instruments, Seshu Madhavapeddy, General Manager, Mobile Internet Devices talks about the MID segment, [...]

Archos 5 hands on at IBC. Video. Thoughts.

When I wrote about Opera 9.5 Mobile a short while back I highlighted how it was a great browser with no hardware to run it on. What I said was that the processing power and screen size wasn’t enough for the software. The user interface was good but in order for it to be taken [...]

Nokia N96. Now there’s a UMPC partner phone!

Continuing my thoughts on smartphones today, I wanted to highlight the Nokia N96 that I checked out in Amsterdam yesterday. Now there’s a phone that, for the first time, has me thinking about upgrading from the N82. Its got a crappy browser, J2ME apps are slow to start up and its got a DVB-H receiver [...]

WinDirStat: Visualize your hard drive

It seems great that you could go out and pick up a tiny netbook capable of browsing the web for around $300 today, however many of these inexpensive new netbooks offer only a small amount of storage. For instance, the new Inspiron Mini 9 can only be equipped (from the factory) with up to 16GB [...]

Eee PC 904HD in the wild

As I happened to be in my local mall I decided to look at what’s new in the electronics store. I was surprised to find the store had a whole dedicated netbook section and among them were the new Eee 904 models. These are basically the 1000h with the smaller 8.9 inch screen. The price [...]

M860 Slate UMPC.

This one isn’t going to win any style or processing power competitions but as Jenn says, if it’s offered at a reasonable price, it might find an audience. Its got useful on-frame controls a useable 1.2Ghz VIA processor and Windows XP. Could be a good one for those car PC fans!

Last call for MIDs, Intel

That’s the feeling I have right now as we head into the Christmas marketing season where there’s an iPhone 3G, 2nd-gen iPod touch, New Archos PMP’s, Opera Mobile 9.5 on multiple devices and Google Android ready to go.
What’s the delay? Did Intel and partners simply go for the instant cash and switch resources to Netbooks [...]

26 Minutes with the SX3 uber-netbook

A great overview video from JKKMobile on the SX3. Its attractive, has a good hardware design and impressive set of specifications and features. Does it perform though? My take-away thoughts from the video are that its a stylish, useable form factor but if its going to use Vista, a 1.6Ghz is the entry point, not the [...]

AMD’s UVC CPUs. I think I have one here!

AMD have traditionally kept well out of the UMPC and netbook market but after recent news that they might have a value-oriented platform on the way, previous news that there was a 1Ghz part in the works and the appearance of the 1.2Ghz Turion X2 in the Raon Digital Everun Note I’m using to type [...]

iPod Touch gets small upgrades

Fear not, UMPC Portal isn’t going to start reporting on audio player news, instead we’re just mentioning the iPod Touch refresh as it pertains to the MID category.

Sucker Punch's Nate Fox finds PSP "exciting"

Sly Cooper - Image 1Speaking to VideoGamer.com during the Leipzig Games Convention, Sucker Punch Productions' game director Nate Fox revealed that the studio may still be making a PSP title in the future.

"PSP is pretty exciting," said Fox. "I spend a lot of time on the bus, so it'd be nice to contribute to gamers around the world who also play games on the bus."

Fox didn't say any more apart from that, but he did also mention in a separate interview that Sucker Punch would "would love to get back to Sly". Add the two together, mix in some imaginative speculation, and voila! Although earlier rumors about a new Sly Cooper game have since been dispelled, there may yet be a chance for a Sly Cooper PSP title.

Of course, the operative word here is "speculation". Still, Fox's comments about the PS3 not having the Sly franchise's target demographic yet coupled with his love for the PSP does lead one to thinking.

Amazon is selling an 80GB, XP-equipped 1000H for just $450. The Samsung Netbook

Jkk has posted about a story from Aving.net about a forthcoming Samsung netbook. What does Samsung have to offer the bandwagon? Well for starters, the unit looks pretty slick. The bottom of the casing is curved and it appears to be quite thin. As far as I can tell from the translated page, the unit [...]

Inspiron Mini 9 3G and SSD info

Jkk has uncovered some additional information regarding the type of SSDs used in the Mini 9, and the 3G situation.
When it comes to SSDs, it seems as though the performance will depend on the capacity. Jkk (who certainly knows something about these SSDs) notes that the 16GB Mini 9 will use STEC’s (fast) SSD module, [...]

Acer Aspire One With Integrated 3G

According to BGR, The 8.9" Aspire One netbook is expected to be available with integrated 3G starting this November in Taiwan. The upgrade will cost an additional $95 over the standard model, but there is no word on when we might see a similar bundle arriving in the States. However, integrated 3G was always part of the plan, so with any luck we won't have to wait too long. On a related note, jKOnTheRun spotted a Japanese newspaper flyer that appears to offer a similar bundle with the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and the HP 2133 along with a $370 subsidy when users sign up for a two year 3G plan with Emobile. Why buy a MID?

An interesting article over at PCMag.com has author Tim Bajarin asking "Who would want to buy a Mobile Internet Device?". Throughout the article, Tim explains that he doesn’t quite see the function of a MID, or how it might fit a consumer’s needs. After reading the article, I think this is another example of how [...]

Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for $99? I wish.

Project Inkwell 'Spark' Aiming for OLPC's Head With Its Handheld Form Factor

Project Inkwell's Spark is not only a potential OLPC competitor because of it's handheld, UMPC form factor and K-12 educational focus, but also because it doesn't look like it's made exclusively for the preschool user base. The Spark was developed in conjunction with the design firm Ideo, and though details are vague, the visuals are somewhat revealing. The Spark looks roughly the size of a PSP, with a +/- rocker switch and scroll wheel adorning the left and right sides of the handheld.

There's no mention of touchscreen functionality, but the screen looks to be lined with buttons and comes with a case housing a foldout keyboard, plus room for a mouse and spare battery. Less visible features would include bluetooth and wi-fi. It's still too early to talk release or pricing details, but this seems like a concept that's very feasible to produce. Here is a video short video showing some early touchscreen action on the upcoming Everun Note. Google Chrome Beta. Initial tests not good for UMPC users.

What’s the most important browser feature for UMPC and Tablet users? Touch screen scrolling. It works well on [...]

ARM Cortex Browsing Test shows the Full Internet Experience.

UMPCPortal Predicts: Global Netbook Sales Numbers, 2008-2011

If netbooks are following the traditional product cycle, they must be nearing the peak in Europe this week as two major budget supermarket chains push out the devices to their mainstream customer base. Everex Cloudbook Refresh

Jkk has spotted a refresh of the original Everex Cloudbook. If you will recall, the Cloudbook was one of the early netbooks and competitors to the Eee PCs. New Web Browser. Chrome ‘Beta’ from Google. has Webkit and Mozilla roots. Google Window I suspect.

Breaking News (Meaning I don’t have much information at this stage!) Google have just posted confirmation that they will launch a new browser tomorrow (3rd Sept.)
